JULY ROUNDUP: THE PLAYOFF PUSH HEATS UP
The stretch run is here. With the regular season winding down and every game now shaping playoff seeding, July didn't just bring good baseball, it brought some of the best individual and team performances we've seen all year in both divisions.
Let's start in the 50's, where Legacy Sports Bar authored the turnaround of the summer, going from the bottom of the standings to the best record in the division in a single month. Fueling that surge was Matt Widell, who put together one of the most electric months anyone will have all year: seven home runs in July alone, including a three-homer game on July 7th. His teammate Mikey Rodriguez matched him blow for blow with a perfect .1000 month at the plate. And BJ's newest addition, Mike Martz, couldn't have asked for a better welcome to the league, going 5-for-5 in his very first game.
Over in the 60's, Efficient Energy stole the show, going a perfect 3-0 in July after a shakier June, the single biggest turnaround in either division this month. Jarvis Quenga was the engine behind it, capped by a monster 7-RBI game on July 21st. Darrell Heim quietly matched the month's best hitters with a flawless .1000 average of his own.
With playoff positioning on the line, both divisions remain tightly bunched at the top, meaning every one of these hot streaks matters. Here's the full breakdown.
50s Division
Warm welcome to four new players
First, a warm welcome. Three new faces stepped into the batter's box for the first time this season, and one of them made sure everybody noticed. Mike Martz debuted for BJ's with a perfect 5-for-5 night, he’s an experienced ball player who also plays in the NCS Wednesday night 40 and over league. Jesse Herbert also plays Wednesdays through NCS, plus some tournament ball. Tim Ramsey is a huge pickup for Capital Gold, he is a veteran ball player with many years of high-level tournament ball on his resume. Both Herbert and Ramsey made solid first impressions for BJ's and Capital Gold Bail Bonds, respectively. Keep an eye on all three as the season heads down the stretch. Ron Espinoza joined Legacy but they had a bye the week he joined, so no stats for July for him.
Top 10 Performers — July
As for the players already established in the division, July belonged to Matt Widell. He hit seven home runs in a single month, punctuated by a three-homer explosion on July 7th, and finished among the league leaders in nearly every offensive category. He wasn't alone. Bill Buck led the division in RBI, Donald Ambrose and Dave Liskey both hit north of .880, and Mikey Rodriguez turned in a perfect month at the plate, going 13-for-13 with 16 RBI along the way. This was as deep and as loaded a group of hitters as we've seen all season.
Biggest Batting Average Jumps, June → July
A few bats really turned it on between June and July. Mark Hutchinson more than doubled his average, and Chris D'Auria, Kevin Lockhart, and Chad Bernhardt all posted big jumps of their own, a great sign for lineups looking to finish the season strong.
Team Performances
The bigger story, though, might be team-wide. Legacy Sports Bar went winless in June and came back in July to post the best record in the division, a complete reversal built on the backs of Widell, Rodriguez, and company. Incredible Pets kept climbing too, tightening up their run differential and continuing to look like a team peaking at the right time. Elite/Onyx remains a steady, dependable force at the top of the standings, and with playoff seeding on the line down the stretch, every team in this division still has something to play for in August.
60s Division
Top 10 Performers — July
The 60's didn't welcome any new faces to the lineup card this month, but the players already on the roster made sure there was no shortage of highlights.
Jarvis Quenga had an incredible July, batting .923 and capping it off with a 7-RBI outburst on July 21st. Jeff Yeargin and Ron Segon kept the Hayes Auto Sales lineup humming, and Darrell Heim quietly put together a perfect month, going 11-for-11 across all three July games. This is a group of hitters rounding into midseason form at exactly the right time.
Team Trends — June vs. July
Team-wise, Efficient Energy was the story of July, going a perfect 3-0 and posting the best run differential of any team in either division this month. Hayes Auto Sales kept pace right behind them, and Realty Management Company put together a strong month of their own, climbing back into the thick of the playoff race. With the standings this tight, August is shaping up to be a dogfight for playoff position.
Biggest Batting Average Jumps, June vs. July
On the average-jump leaderboard, Rick Cady turned in a perfect July to lead the pack, with Rick Bradley and Ector Hernandez both making major strides of their own. Momentum is clearly building for a handful of lineups heading into the final stretch.
SCOREKEEPER'S NOTES
July's stats were pulled from the league database and cross-referenced game by game across both divisions. Top performer rankings use a minimum at-bat threshold (6 AB for July leaderboards, 8 AB in June and 6 AB in July for the batting average comparisons) to keep small sample sizes from skewing the list. No grand slams or cycles were confirmed in July, though several players came close with multi-home run games worth watching for next month.
